Coronavirus\u00a0<\/strong>disease 2019, also known as COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), a member of a virus family
of Coronaviridae. The disease was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of
Hubei province in China. Since then the disease has spread to more than 200 countries
resulting in pandemic, infecting more than 1.4 million people (as of 8 April 2020), resulting in
more than 83,000 deaths.<\/p>

Common symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath. Other symptoms are sore throat,
running nose, fatigue, muscle ache, diarrhoea and loss of smell. The majority of cases are mild
but a small percentage will progress to pneumonia which can be severe and fatal.
The virus is mainly spread by droplets produced when those infected cough, sneeze or talk.
This normally takes place during close contact. The droplets may also be produced during
breathing but will not travel far. The infection can also be contacted when people touch
contaminated surface of various objects and then touch their face. The diagnosis is confirmed
by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from nasopharyngeal
swab.<\/p>

Medical support from LFM:<\/strong> For severe COVID-19 cases with respiratory distress, BiPAP,
CPAP, and oxygen concentrators can assist patients by improving oxygen levels, supporting
breathing, and aiding recovery.<\/p> \n <\/div>\n

\n

Asthma\u00a0<\/strong>is a common lung disease affecting about 300 million people worldwide. In Malaysia
it is estimated about 1.5 million people of all ages suffer from\u00a0asthma<\/strong>. As many as 50%
children with\u00a0asthma\u00a0<\/strong>missed school and about a third of adults missed work because
of\u00a0asthma\u00a0and many of these patients had to be hospitalized and experienced symptoms of
uncontrolled disease. Suboptimal treatment and inadequate knowledge about the illness are
factors contributed to poor control of\u00a0asthma<\/strong>.
Medical support from LFM<\/strong>: Patients with severe or uncontrolled asthma may benefit from
CPAP or oxygen<\/strong> concentrators to ease breathing during acute attacks and improve
oxygenation.<\/p>

Chronic obstructive pulmonary<\/strong> disease affects almost exclusively adult smokers. Initial
symptoms include cough with sputum production and difficulty in breathing initially on
severe exertion but later on may be so debilitating that even walking a few steps can be a real
struggle. In the terminal stage of the illness many patients would require continuous oxygen
supplement to alleviate their breathlessness.<\/p>

Medical support from LFM:<\/strong> Oxygen concentrators and, in some cases, BiPAP can help
patients manage breathlessness, maintain oxygen levels, and improve quality of life.<\/p> \n <\/div>\n

\n

Chronic ventilatory failure<\/strong> is a condition whereby the respiratory muscle
weakness or the chest wall deformity or both result in inefficient respiration. If left
untreated, most patients will die of inadequate oxygen or excessive carbon dioxide or
both, which is often a slow and agonizing death. The condition can be satisfactorily
treated with oxygen supplement or breathing apparatus\/ventilator which can be placed at
patient\u2019s home.<\/p>

Medical support from LFM:<\/strong> BiPAP, CPAP, and oxygen concentrators can be used at
home to support breathing, correct oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and significantly
improve survival and comfort.<\/p>

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia<\/strong>\u00a0is a lung disease that occurs in premature neonates who
needed oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation during their early lives. The lung damage
can be severe that long term oxygen may be required for many of these infants for a
considerable period of time.<\/p>

Medical support from LFM:<\/strong> Oxygen concentrators provide essential long-term oxygen
support for affected infants, helping them grow and thrive despite lung impairment.<\/p>

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, affecting the nose,
throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, lead to
hospitalization or death, especially in young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic
lung conditions. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose,
body aches, headaches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea.<\/p>

Medical support from LFM:<\/strong> Patients with severe influenza who develop breathing
difficulties or low oxygen levels can benefit from oxygen concentrators<\/strong> to maintain adequate
oxygenation. In cases of respiratory distress, BiPAP or CPAP<\/strong> may be used to support
breathing and reduce complications.<\/p>
